Introduction to Food Systems Planning

Speaker: Marina Smirnova

Marina is a planner with a background in environmental outreach and education, and an immense passion for agriculture - both urban and otherwise. At Ryerson University, she learned about the importance of reintegrating nature into the city, and the power of growing food right in our communities. Her research focus during her degree was land use policy supporting small-scale farmers. Complementary to her studies, Marina was involved with several local organizations that bring food and people together. Currently, Marina is an Area Planner for the City of Quinte West. As a planner, Marina wants to help create supportive policies for agriculture at all scales and in all contexts. In her free time, you can find Marina tending to her backyard vegetable garden or trying out new recipes with local produce.

Laura Lebel-Pantazopoulos holds a Masters of Planning in Urban Development at X University (formerly known as Ryerson University), and a Bachelor’s of Industrial Design from Ontario College of Art and Design University. She believes that flexible processes and good communication are at the heart of every successful project. Laura currently works at Spruce Labs, a landscape architecture and planning firm, where she brings together the detailed people-focused lens of industrial design with the spatial and community-based challenges of planning.

Food Sovereignty and Community Food Systems

​​Speaker: Rav Singh
Date: November 16th

Rav is an urban farmer in Mississauga and the Region of Peel. As a young, BIPOC woman in agriculture, she started her organization Shade of Miti to revolutionize the food and climate systems in Mississauga. Through Shade of Miti, she grows and sells organic produce, co-hosts the Lassi Revolution Podcast, and envisions sustainable food systems in Mississauga that are rooted in sovereignty and justice, and not threatened by climate change.
